Mumbai Indians pacer Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss the first few matches of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, according to reports.
Bumrah, who is recovering from a back injury, is likely to join the MI squad by April after missing the team’s first three matches, which are scheduled in March. However, Bumrah could be unavailable for a few more games as there is no certainty about when he will be match fit.
The 31-year-old was last seen in action during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia in January. He suffered a lower-back injury on the second day of the fifth Test in Sydney and couldn’t bowl in the second innings of that match.
Bumrah was also ruled out of the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy, which India won after beating New Zealand in the final in Dubai. The pacer had been named in the provisional squad for the marquee event but couldn’t recover fully in time for the tournament.
Bumrah had undergone a back surgery in March 2023 and missed the IPL season that year. However, he bounced back in 2024, picking 20 wickets in 13 matches for Mumbai Indians before playing a pivotal role in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph.
Five-time champion Mumbai Indians begins its IPL 2025 campaign against archrival Chennai Super Kings on March 23 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
